Question
Hi everybody, I just need your help. Does anyone know what kind of printers, ink and paper should I get for making my own digital photo lab? I'm a freelance photographer and i want to print and sell photos at the same time. I would like to open a small section of studio so again i need my own printer for developing the photos. Also, I wanted to make calendars and postcards, which i have no idea about kinds of papers i should use. Maybe these printers are expensive, but i dont mind that. If anybody has an advice plz dont hesitate in replying me. Thanx a lot. Bye :)
Answer
There are some rather amazing printers out there that can make truly large prints that are nearly archival. I am guessing that your intended market are photographers and agencies that need prints at least 20 x 24 and up as well as large print runs of calendars and sheets of postcards. The larger printers have the ability to use larger external ink tanks to feed the various inks to the ink jet heads of the printer. With Sam's Club and Costco (and others) offering digital photo prints of image files for less than the cost of ink and paper, competing with them might be futile. In the art world Epson printers (Pro 9800 ... About $6000 ... less than some pro DSLR bodies) and paper are the standard, although there are some specialty printers that are only made for the large print market. PMA had a lot of them on display the last time I attended their convention. Their next one is in Las Vegas in March of this year. This should get you started on preparing a budget for your new Enterprise.
